How to Protect Pipes From Freezing in Texas Homes

Frozen pipes are one of the most expensive winter problems Texas homeowners face. Because many homes have plumbing in garages, exterior walls, or utility areas, they are especially vulnerable during sudden cold snaps.

Pipes most at risk include exterior hose bibs, garage plumbing, laundry room supply lines, and plumbing located in exterior walls. When temperatures drop quickly, these areas can freeze before the home feels very cold inside.

Preventing frozen pipes starts with insulating exposed plumbing and covering hose bibs. Sealing drafts near plumbing penetrations and keeping garage doors closed during freezes also helps reduce risk.

During extreme cold, opening sink cabinets on exterior walls and allowing a slow drip may help, but insulation and draft sealing are the most effective long-term solutions.

A little preparation can help avoid burst pipes, water damage, and emergency repairs.
